From field scan to finished plat, Carlson brings point cloud data to the world of CAD design. In the field, Carlson Point Cloud can read scan data from a wide variety of popular scanners and large point formats. The software enables users to transform clouds of data – up to a billion points – into usable data for design and analysis. Carlson’s field-to-finish inside Point Cloud is a powerful tool, yet designed specifically to provide Carlson’s well known ease-of-use.

Carlson Point Cloud includes basic features such as registration, flexible 3D viewing and selection-based drafting of fully annotated point symbols and linework through linkage to the Carlson field-to-finish routines. All Carlson Point Cloud scenes can be imported to PDF files. Images from multiple formats can also be selected to be draped over meshes created from your point cloud.

Special features of interest include break-line detection, high and low edge detection, application of templates such as L-shaped curbs to single edge selection (e.g., back of curb); auto-detection of the diameter, height and shape of trees, poles and fire hydrants with full text labeling, corner and curve drafting; and most important, bare earth, lowest surface determination through point cloud filtering. This last detail leads to high-quality TINS, contours, profiles and cross sections.

In addition to many scanner formats, Carlson Point Cloud can import many other files, including LIDAR, Leica, Faro, Riegl, Topcon, DEM, MDL and generic ASCII files.

Carlson Point Cloud is a module of Carlson’s extensive AutoCAD-based office design software line, which also includes Carlson Survey, Carlson Civil, Carlson Hydrology, Carlson Mining and Carlson Takeoff.

FEATURES & BENEFITS

  • Import Control Points – Use control points to register scans and draw them in CAD for use in design.
  • Register Scans – Combine multiple scans using the intuitive dialog interface to register scans and view all scans as a single point cloud.
  • Snap to Point Cloud Features – Snap points to low points, high points low and high edges. Snap points to trees to get diameter, height and drip diameter. Snap to poles for height and diameter levels.
  • Use Field-to-Finish Point Coding – Use your own .fld file to identify features and draw polylines. Save the coordinate points and draw the same field-to-finish in CAD.

  • Snap to Polylines – Snap polylines and points to polyline end points, mid-points and more.
  • Create Mesh – Use point clouds to create meshes to use for exporting to CAD, extracting other data or viewing and analysis.
  • Simplify Mesh – Reduce vertices and faces before exporting to CAD.
  • Extract Profile – Extract profiles from meshes using on-the-fly location selection or defined centerlines (.cl files). Save as .pro files.
  • Extract Sections – Extract sections using on-the-fly location selection or defined centerlines (.cl files). Save as .sct files. View in 3D.
  • Extract Contours – Use the mesh to extract and save contours at user defined intervals. View the contours in 3D clean and refine the contours and draw them in CAD.
