Evergreen Films uses Autodesk software to explore the “what-if” of what’s next in 3D stereoscopic production and post.

Image courtesy of Evergreen Films and Irish Rover Films.

Summary

Based in Los Angeles, California, and Anchorage, Alaska, Evergreen Films was founded by Emmy® award– winning director Pierre de Lespinois and entrepreneur Mike Devlin to combine a wealth of production and technological experience into a full-service production company for the film and high-end television production business. Through innovative use of Autodesk software, Evergreen has emerged as a leader in advanced 3D stereoscopy production and post-production, and has the results to prove it.

To many, the recent explosion in 3D stereoscopic film projects may seem to have come out of nowhere. The Evergreen team, however, has been working toward full-scale 3D production for several years, and Autodesk has been there with them.

“We really saw the 3D wave coming,” says de Lespinois. “As we were designing and developing 3D camera rigs, we noticed that Autodesk was already working toward providing software for 3D stereoscopy, and we knew it was a company to watch. Autodesk is making tools that are enabling us to ask ‘what if?’ and get answers right away.”

Image courtesy of Evergreen Films and Irish Rover Films.

The Challenge

For his part, de Lespinois points to the long history of 3D stereoscopy. “Shooting in 3D isn’t new, of course,” he explains. “There are 3D photographs of Abraham Lincoln, and films using the single-camera anaglyph process date back to before the 1950s. What is new today is we can capture the footage digitally which allows us to more efficiently control the whole process in post.

Never has the phrase “leading edge” been more applicable than in the world of 3D stereoscopic production. “This is a very exciting time for 3D artists and filmmakers,” says de Lespinois. “I’ve never seen something explode on the scene so quickly. There are new 3D television channels, new 3D capability in traditional theaters, manufacturers developing offthe- shelf products that are already 3D compliant. This is a revolution. People need to spend time with the new technology to get a more complete understanding of how 3D works and what it can do.”

The Solution

A long-time user of Autodesk software, Evergreen has made use most recently of Autodesk® Lustre® color grading software, Autodesk® Maya® software for 3D modeling and animation, and Autodesk® Smoke® software for online editing and finishing. According to de Lespinois, these software products were particularly helpful on a recent 3D concert film featuring the Dave Matthews Band.

“We used eight cameras for Dave Matthews, which is really 16 cameras for 3D,” he explains. “This is a live performance in front of 40,000 people, so you can’t just say ‘cut.’ To do it in 3D, you’re not just dealing with zooming, panning, and craning, but you’re also changing the interocular convergence as you get closer to your subject. There is a great deal going on.”

While viewing footage on the 24-foot screen in Evergreen’s Los Angeles studio, the team was able to more easily move from Smoke to Lustre to see everything in 3D and make necessary adjustments.

“The most important thing is to make sure that the 3D placement of the subject is consistent from shot to shot,” says de Lespinois. “Otherwise, viewers’ eyes will instinctively be darting back and forth. We were able to use Smoke, Lustre, and Maya to help make sure that the transition from shot to shot was smoother, more believable, and more comfortable for the eyes. Smoke, Lustre, and Maya worked together seamlessly, and that is very empowering for a director. I am sure of what these tools can do, and that confidence spurs me to more creative freedom.”

The Results

According to de Lespinois, what the Evergreen team achieved in roughly five days on the Dave Matthews concert project would have required more than a year of work in the not-so-distant past. Another upcoming project is called Totem, a feature film that de Lespinois calls a “Native American ghost story.”

“Totem combines live actors with animated characters built using Maya,” he explains. “I appreciate consistency, and our combination of Autodesk products helps give us a more complete palette to work from. There is no stronger toolset for doing visual effects and understanding 3D space. ”

Adding to the products’ appeal is a support team that de Lespinois describes as “second to none.”

“No company has better support than Autodesk,” he says. “We are always on a tight deadline and on multimillion dollar projects that simply cannot be delayed. Add to that the fact that much of our work has never before been done. With Autodesk, we have a technical partner that we can count on. That is crucial in our business.”

Civil Simulate is a powerful 3D interactive simulation and visualization tool. Using literally a single mouse click, Civil Simulate is able to turn any AutoCAD® Civil 3D® projects into hyper realistic, fully rendered drive-through 3D simulation.

Civil Simulates incorporates a built-in 3D modeler which independently renders the CAD drawing’s RAW data. Therefore, the resulting 3D simulation offers high accuracy of ±0.8 In to the CAD drawing and is able to accurately display defined elements such as cross section signs, junctions, intersections, roundabouts, bridges, flyovers, etc.

Civil Simulate offers smooth correlation between the CAD drawing and the 3D simulation. Every change made in the design is instantly viewable in the simulation. The need for additional software to bridge the gaps between the CAD and the 3D simulation is eliminated.

Offering an extremely easy to operate and intuitive user interface, Civil Simulate turns a costly simulation which takes weeks to create, into an immediate and affordable part of any scale design project.

The simplicity of having realistic 3D simulation at hand, even while still in preliminary design stages, can support and assist both design and decision making processes. From road appearance and geometry to safety audits and line-of-sight visibility checks all can be performed from within the simulation to be later addressed in the CAD design.

Civil Simulate can easily drape an Orthophoto or an aerial photography directly onto the 3D simulation to further enhance simulation’s reality and authenticity.

Civil Simulate interactive capabilities allow fully rendered drive through simulation from the driver’s point of view.

Other Supported Autodesk Products: AutoCAD, Autodesk Inventor, Mechanical Desktop, Revit Series

Compatible/Supported Operating Systems: All current versions of Microsoft Windows.

Now in its third decade of development, PolyTrans|CAD is used by tens of thousands of production studios and professional 3D users to cross convert crack-free and render-perfect BREP solids CAD models (in native formats, not reverse engineered secondary CAD formats), and all skinning + animation data, between 3ds Max, Maya, XSI, Lightwave, Cinema-4D and all major downstream file formats ranging from COLLADA to Wavefront OBJ and dozens more.

It is now commonplace, via the widespread use of PolyTrans|CAD, to use Autodesk 3ds Max and Maya to create product brochures, technical documentation and presentation materials of CAD data. PolyTrans|CAD allows all disparate departments of companies (such as engineering, design, marketing and support), and animation production companies alike, to easily exchange and re-use product data without the need to rebuild their 3D datasets.

PolyTrans|CAD imports from native CAD file formats such as ACIS SAT, Alias .wire, Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD, CATIA v4+5, DWG, DWF, IGES, JT Open, Parasolid, Pro/E, Rhino- 3D, Solid Edge, SolidWorks, STEP, STL, XGL, U3D, VDA-FS, XGL, X3D and many others. In addition, dozens of complete and full implementations of all other major 3D DCC file formats are supported such as 3ds Max, Maya, COLLADA, FBX, Lightwave, Softimage XSI, trueSpace, DirectX, OpenFlight, PDB, SketchUp, VRML, XAML and X3D.

Data translation is a very critical business for which Okino’s professional production customers demand perfect conversions, and as such Okino has always guaranteed its data translation software. The software incorporates hundreds of man years of development and over 2 decades of customer usage, testing and refinement which has made PolyTrans the main conversion system used throughout the 3D software industry.

Compatible/Supported Operating Systems: All current versions of Microsoft Windows.

Languages Supported: English

Since the original releases of 3ds Max and Maya, Okino’s PolyTrans-for-3dsMax and PolyTrans-for-Maya have provided the defacto conversion systems for 3ds Max and Maya (Windows) that allows them to freely exchange complete 3D scene data with virtually any other 3D software package or file format, such as Lightwave, Cinema-4D, Softimage-XSI, trueSpace, ACIS SAT, Autodesk Inventor, CATIA v4 + v5, COLLADA, DirectX, DXF/DWG, FBX, IGES, JT, OpenFlight. Parasolid, PDB, Pro/E, Rhino, Solid Edge, SolidWorks, SketchUp, STEP, trueSpace, U3D, VRML, XAML, X3D and just about every other major 3D file format. The complete list of supported file formats is at http://www.okino.com/conv/filefrmt.htm.

Resulting translated files are ‘Render Ready’ meaning that they can be loaded and rendered in the destination program with little or no changes necessary. The translation process accommodates polygonal meshes, trimmed NURBS, skinning, hierarchy, vertex normals/colors/texture-coordinates, material and texture mapping parameters, lights, cameras, animation conversion and automatic 2D bitmap conversion.

Most importantly, Okino does not use reverse engineered CAD modules as is done by others, but rather licenses, utilizes and/or accesses the industry standard CAD geometry engines from Autodesk, Dassault Systemes (CATIA), PTC (ProE), Solid Edge, SolidWorks, Spatial (ACIS solids engine), UGS/Siemens (JT Open toolkit) and others.

Please refer to http://www.okino.com/conv/pt4maya.htm.

Muster 6 is Virtual Vertex next generation render farm management system.

Muster is made by dynamic services. They take cares of managing the remote hosts, control them and check for faults during the rendering process. Any addition to the hosts pool can be done with no interruption in the rendering pipeline. You can add an host, propagate configurations, remove it or reconfigure on the fly. Any change is handled by Muster that make sure your renderings will still continue in any circumstance. You can even plan shutdowns of idle hosts. Muster will take care of waking up them when required!

Muster 6 is completely cross platform. It can be installed on Microsoft Windows, Apple MAC OS X and Linux. Choose to deploy your render engines on the best operating system for your environment giving you the flexibility you need. Mixed environments are fully supported using our internal substitution path engine. This means you run the same job across different platforms and get back exactly what you expect with no surprises.

Muster is also able to dispatch single frame images across multiple hosts (available for Maya, 3D Studio Max, Mental Ray, Lightwave and XSI). The images are divided in slices rendered on different hosts and then assembled back by the Dispatcher in a final coherent image.

Imagine easily building a physically simulated railroad trestle where the timbers flex and crack when it is hit by a simulated boulder, with the shockwave ripping through the ductile metal rails. Or imagine twisting a wooden timber until it shatters. Use DMM to make your ideas come to life!

DMM or “Digital Molecular Matter” is a new simulation technology that makes the power of finite element computation accessible to artists wishing to create highly realistic animations of flexing and breaking objects by modeling their internal stresses. While covering the the use of DMM in the hit LucasArts game “Star Wars: The Force Unleashed”, Vanity Fair Magazine called it “a technological breakthrough, nearly as revolutionary as the introduction of sound in film”.

Now you can use this same technology to easily bring your artistic creations to life with the DMM Plug-in for Maya and Max. DMM accurately models the stress within objects, allowing deformation and fracture to occur naturally with all the subtle details you expect. The DMM Plug-In comes with sophisticated tools and a library of physical materials ranging from jelly to diamond. Custom materials can also be created. The Plug-In is fully integrated with Maya and Max workflows and can take advantage of features such as fields and keyed movement. DMM has been engineered to be responsive to foster the kind of interactivity you need in order to use simulation effectively.

The DMM Plug-In also includes our unique “Splintering” Technology that allows the automatic creation of additional geometry for fractured areas to give your animations an extra degree of realism without increasing simulation time.
